What is a Clinical Nurse Specialist?
A Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is an advanced practice nurse who has completed a master’s or doctorate degree in nursing with a specific clinical focus. A CNS is also a licensed registered nurse who must be certified by the Greece State Board of Nursing to practice as a clinical nurse specialist. CNSs are clinical experts whose practice may be defined by:

a setting (e.g. critical care, emergency room);
a disease or medical subspecialty (e.g. diabetes, oncology);
a type of care (e.g. psychiatric, rehabilitation); or
a type of health problem (e.g. pain, wounds, stress)
Clinical Nurse Specialists provide direct patient care, diagnose and treat illness within their clinical specialty, serve as expert consultants for nursing staffs, participate in research and serve as leaders in reforming and designing nursing care practices as well as the nation’s healthcare delivery system.
